 A Note from Nirvair

Sat Nam.

Greetings from New Mexico!

We are celebrating the birthday, life and legacy of Yogi Bhajan at Hacienda de Guru Ram Das this month. It is always a fun and uplifting celebration. We also will be chanting the Adi Shakti Mantra and the Guru Mantra of Guru Ram Das on Yogi Bhajan’s actual birthday, August 26th. These two mantras are chanted all over the world on Yogi Bhajan’s birthday. If you have not participated in this before, I highly recommend it. Check with your local Teacher about the time and place that it will be chanted in your locale. Perhaps you and your other local teachers could use the event to raise money for The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings ™! Here is wonderful video I’d like to share with you from Krishna Kaur where she teaches about the Adi Shakti Mantra:

Have you gone digital? Visit our online store ‘The Source’ for digital downloads of your favorite Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan® books and manuals. Now you can access all of your teaching materials on your Kindle, iPad or Computer with The Aquarian Collection! At the KRI e-book store we have special e-book pricing on KRI books and manuals, including treasured favorites like Laws of Life:The Teachings of Yogi Bhajan and Kriya: Yoga Sets, Meditations & Classic Kriyas , the recently reissued The Ancient Art of Self-Healing, and Psyche of the Golden Shield. When I travel and teach, I take my iPad and teach from it…it really is a great tool when you have all these wonderful manuals right at your fingertips.

On Tratakum…

Have you done the Tratakum meditation recently? KRI’s own Guru Datta Singh just put orange mat board around the Yogi Bhajan picture and reports it is a wonderful improvement and enhanced his experience. You may like to give it a try yourself.

Many of you have used Yogi Bhajan’s tratakum picture for meditation. This was my first forty day sadhana in the very early 70s. I had many wonderful experiences and insights during that practice and had the opportunity to ask Yogi Bhajan about my predominant experience. My experience was that I was gazing at him but I was communicating with my own Higher Self. Being a new student, I thought that perhaps my perception was flawed. Yogi Bhajan, however, verified my experience and let me know that this was the true nature and purpose of the meditation.

We have a free download of an early publication from KRI about the Tratakum and Guru Yoga here. Guru yoga is one of the traditional kinds of yoga. Yogi Bhajan was adamant that he was not a Guru. He was a teacher, guide and a deliverer of the sacred teachings of Kundalini Yoga.

You can buy your own personal copy of the tratakum picture by clicking here.

In gratitude and sending you many blessings,

Nirvair Singh Khalsa

News from The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings

Sat Nam From The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings™

Yogi Bhajan Library of TeachingsThis month we are celebrating Yogi Bhajan’s birthday, which is a sweet time to honor Yogi Bhajan and reflect on the many ways his life has made an impact. Some of you had the opportunity to meet Yogi Bhajan in person and others of you have only met him through the amazing teachers and teachings that carry on his legacy. At The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings™ we feel a special dedication to this legacy through the continuing effort to make the Teachings of Yogi Bhajan available and free to all who wish to connect with this extraordinary teacher.

Yogi Bhajan’s life as a spiritual teacher was dedicated to raising consciousness, he taught us how to let go of our trauma and drama and rise above what we think we are capable of to serve others. He calls us to use our hearts and compassionate attitude to serve the world.

At Yogi Bhajan’s 64th birthday celebration he said:

Today I am sixty-four, it doesn't matter. I will exactly do what I have done for all these years. If you cannot see God in all, you cannot see God at all and I don't care what philosophy in psychology you are going to learn but one thing you have to learn, drop your pain pick up somebody's, God will pick up yours. It's a very good bargain, that's what I did.

I am very grateful to God and to the blessing of all the people that I will have few years to serve and I am going to do much more work than I have done. Because there is a much more pain and much more need to fill in the gap. You as Americans have to make a pledge that you will give hour to hour a day to help the fellow Americans. It's not that my richness of spirit, of mind and of my body and my possessions means anything but also it's the width and the large heart and the kind, and the compassionate attitude of a human which can make the difference.

This is an almost-perfect food for women, but good for men as well. Almonds benefit the eyes, watermelon seeds reduce anemia, walnuts benefit the brain, and chilies are good for the intestinal tract. It can be served plain, with rice, with chapatis or with pakoras.

I large raw onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1½ inches fresh peeled ginger root, finely chopped
1–2 green chilies, chopped
¼ cup ghee
3 rounded Tbsp. garbanzo flour
¼ cup lemon juice
2 tsp. turmeric
1½ tsp. cumin
1½ tsp. coriander
1½ tsp. garam masala
4 cups yogurt or buttermilk
18 cup peeled almonds
18 cup walnuts
¼ cup cashews, pecans or apricot kernels
18 cup watermelon or pumpkin seeds
2 zucchinis, chopped

Mix ¼ cup yogurt or buttermilk with garbanzo flour and stir until it forms a smooth paste. Then stir into the rest of the yogurt or buttermilk.

Saute onions in ghee until they are clear to golden brown. Add chilies, ginger, and garlic and saute until ginger and garlic are golden. Add turmeric and sauté on a low heat until golden brown. Then add other spices. Add yogurt or buttermilk mixture. Then add lemon juice. Continue cooking on low heat. Add zucchinis, nuts and seeds and continue simmering until zucchinis are soft.

Q & A with Yogi Bhajan

“Long Ek Ong Kaars”: The Quickest Way to Liberation as explained by Yogi Bhajan

Yogi Bhajan defined ‘Spiritual Teacher’ in many different ways over the course of his 40 years of lectures. He emphasized the critical role of ‘Teacher’ in a person's life, as well as the importance of recognizing the costs of the role to one's own karma as well as the effects the role has on the destiny of others. Finally, he spoke of the limitless nature of the identity of a Teacher and the infinity it embodies. He often said, "I did not come here to collect disciples but to create Teachers." It was his life's mission.

This month we celebrate the life of Yogi Bhajan on August 26th—his birthday!—by chanting the Adi Shakti Mantra for 2.5 hours in the Amrit Vela. This mantra is sometimes referred to as “Long Ek Ong Kaars”, while its more technical names include Long Chant, Morning Call and Adi Shakti Mantra. On July 14, 1992, at Khalsa Women’s Training Camp, Yogi Bhajan taught about the Adi Shakti Mantra. This class was captured on video and can now be viewed at The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings™. In this lecture Yogi Bhajan explains that the Adi Shakti Mantra provides the quickest way to liberation.

Adi Shakti Mantra video lecture:

Also notice that there is an interactive transcript with the video in case you want to look more carefully at what is being said.

For more information on how to chant this mantra please read the following article by Shakti Parwha Kaur Khalsa, the mother of 3HO and the first student of Yogi Bhajan. This article also includes a link to MSS Krishna Kaur of Los Angeles chanting Long Ek Ong Kars.

Have a blessed Sadhana on August 26th chanting 2.5 hours of the Adi Shakti Mantra and 11 minutes of Guru Guru Wahe Guru Guru Ram Das Guru!
